15TPH Brackish Water Desalination System for a Mining Company in Uganda | Industrial RO Brackish Water Desalination Case Study

Customized industrial RO solution for mineral-rich groundwater and stable mining production water supply

 · Project Overview

Mining operations require a reliable industrial water supply for production, washing, equipment support, and general plant use. In many inland mining areas, groundwater is available but contains elevated dissolved salts, hardness, iron, manganese, and suspended impurities. Without proper treatment, these contaminants can cause scaling, fouling, corrosion, unstable production water quality, and higher maintenance pressure.

To solve these challenges, a mining company in Uganda selected Zhongnuo Water Treatment to design and manufacture a 15 m3/h brackish water desalination system. The customized system treats brackish groundwater through pretreatment, softening, RO desalination, UV sterilization, storage, and distribution to production water points.

Production water supply for a mining company

 · Project Challenges

The client needed a stable industrial RO brackish water desalination system that could handle mineral-rich groundwater and supply reliable water for mining production use.

◎  Brackish groundwater required desalination

The groundwater contained dissolved salts that could not be solved by simple filtration. RO desalination was required to reduce salinity and improve production water quality.

◎  Iron and manganese increased pretreatment difficulty

Mining-area groundwater may contain iron and manganese, which can foul downstream equipment and affect membrane performance if not removed before RO treatment.

◎  Hardness control was needed before RO

High hardness can create scaling on RO membranes and pipelines. A softening system with brine regeneration was included to protect the RO system and extend operating cycles.

◎  Industrial operation required stable supply

The system needed to deliver 15 m3/h treated water with reliable storage, UV sterilization, and distribution to production water points.

 · System Introduction

This 15 m3/h brackish water desalination system was designed for a mining company using brackish groundwater as the feed water source. The process integrates mineral removal pretreatment, softening, reverse osmosis desalination, UV sterilization, pure water storage, and final water supply.

Pretreatment for difficult groundwater

The process begins with the Raw Water Tank and Raw Water Pump. The Multi-media Filter reduces suspended solids and turbidity, while the Manganese Sand Filter helps reduce iron and manganese from the groundwater. This pretreatment stage protects downstream softening and RO equipment from fouling.

Softening and membrane protection

The Water Softener reduces hardness before the RO system, helping prevent membrane scaling. The Brine Tank supports regular softener regeneration, ensuring stable hardness removal during continuous industrial operation. The Security Filter captures fine particles before the high pressure pump.

RO desalination and production water supply

The High Pressure Pump sends pretreated water into the RO Reverse Osmosis System, where dissolved salts and impurities are significantly reduced. Treated water is stored in the Pure Water Tank, sterilized by UV, and delivered through the Water Supply System to production water points.

 · Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Why is RO used for brackish groundwater?

RO is effective for reducing dissolved salts and many dissolved impurities, making it suitable for industrial brackish water desalination where filtration alone is not enough.

2. Why include a manganese sand filter?

A manganese sand filter helps remove iron and manganese, reducing the risk of fouling and protecting downstream softening and RO equipment.

3. What is the function of the water softener and brine tank?

The softener reduces hardness to help prevent membrane scaling. The brine tank provides salt solution for softener regeneration.

4. Can this system be customized for different mining sites?

Yes. Zhongnuo Water Treatment can customize pretreatment, RO membrane configuration, tank volume, automation level, and distribution design based on groundwater quality and production demand.
