6TPH Ultrapure Water System for a Biopharmaceutical Company in Malaysia | Biopharmaceutical Water Treatment Case Study

Customized double-pass RO plus EDI and polishing mixed bed solution for biopharmaceutical production water

 · Project Overview

In biopharmaceutical manufacturing, water quality is closely connected to process consistency, equipment cleanliness, and quality control. High-purity water is commonly required for formulation support, cleaning, rinsing, laboratory use, and production utility systems. If dissolved salts, organics, particles, or microorganisms remain in the water, they may increase process risk and affect manufacturing stability.

To support its production requirements, a biopharmaceutical company in Malaysia selected Zhongnuo Water Treatment to design and manufacture a 6 m3/h ultrapure water system. The customized solution converts municipal tap water into stable ultrapure production water through pretreatment, double-pass RO, EDI, UV sterilization, polishing mixed bed treatment, and terminal filtration.

Production water for biopharmaceutical processes

 · Project Challenges

As production demand increased, the client needed a more stable and controllable ultrapure water system for continuous manufacturing and quality management.

Production water purity requirements were high

Biopharmaceutical processes are sensitive to conductivity, particles, microbial risk, and ionic contamination. Ordinary purified water could not provide the long-term stability needed for sensitive production use.

Municipal feed water quality could fluctuate

Although municipal tap water is relatively stable, seasonal changes in turbidity, residual chlorine, hardness, and dissolved solids could affect membrane operation and final water quality.

The system needed continuous, reliable operation

Production water points required stable pressure and continuous supply. Any interruption or water quality fluctuation could affect batch planning, cleaning schedules, and production rhythm.

Final water quality protection was also critical

Even after deep purification, storage and distribution can introduce secondary risks. UV sterilization, polishing mixed bed treatment, and terminal filtration were therefore important safeguards.

 · System Introduction

This 6 m3/h ultrapure water system was designed for biopharmaceutical production applications. It integrates pretreatment, double-pass reverse osmosis, EDI continuous deionization, UV sterilization, ultrapure water storage, polishing mixed bed treatment, and terminal filtration into a complete high-purity water supply line.

Stable pretreatment for membrane protection

The Multi-media Filter reduces suspended solids, the Activated Carbon Filter removes residual chlorine and organics, the Softening Water Filter with Salt Tank reduces hardness and scaling risk, and the Security Filter captures fine particles before the first RO stage.

Double-pass RO and EDI for higher purity

The first-stage RO removes most dissolved salts and impurities, while the second-stage RO further lowers the ionic load. The EDI System then provides continuous deep deionization, helping the system achieve stable high-purity water with reduced chemical regeneration requirements.

Final polishing for production water points

UV Sterilization reduces microbial risk, the Ultrapure Water Tank provides buffer storage, and the Water Supply System delivers water through a Polishing Mixed Bed and Terminal Filter before it reaches production water points.
