Industrial RO Water Pretreatment System

The industrial RO water pretreatment system removes sediment, turbidity, residual chlorine, hardness, organic matter, iron, and manganese before water enters the reverse osmosis unit.

Proper pretreatment reduces RO membrane fouling and scaling, improves system stability, and lowers long-term maintenance costs. Zhongnuo provides customized pretreatment systems from 0.25 m³/h to 100 m³/h for continuous industrial operation.

Product Description

1. Suitable Raw Water

The system can be designed for:

  • Borehole and well water
  • River, lake, and surface water
  • Municipal tap water
  • Low- and medium-TDS brackish water
  • Industrial process and recycled water

The final configuration is selected according to turbidity, hardness, SDI, chlorine, iron, manganese, silica, and organic content.

2. Typical Pretreatment Process

Raw Water → Raw Water Tank → Feed Pump → Multimedia Filter → Activated Carbon Filter → Water Softener or Antiscalant Dosing → 5 μm Cartridge Filter → RO System

Different water conditions may require additional treatment:

  • ♦ High iron and manganese: Oxidation and manganese sand filtration
  • High hardness: Water softener or antiscalant dosing
  • High turbidity: Enhanced multimedia filtration or ultrafiltration
  • Surface water: Coagulation, dosing, and UF pretreatment
  • High organic content: Activated carbon or additional oxidation

For raw water with heavy suspended solids or microorganisms, an ultrafiltration system can be installed before the industrial RO system.

3. Target Pretreated Water Quality

Parameter Typical Design Target
Outlet turbidity ≤1 NTU
SDI ≤3
Cartridge filtration 5 μm
Residual chlorine Within RO membrane inlet limit
Suspended solids Significantly reduced
Scaling risk Controlled through softening or dosing

Actual performance depends on the raw-water analysis, treatment process, flow rate, and operating conditions.

6. Applications

Industrial RO pretreatment systems are widely used in:

  • ♦ Food and beverage production
  • ♦ Pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • ♦ Electronics and ultrapure water plants
  • ♦ Chemical processing
  • ♦ Textile printing and dyeing
  • ♦ Boiler feedwater treatment
  • ♦ Mining and remote camps
  • ♦ Bottled-water plants
  • ♦ Industrial parks
  • ♦ Borehole water purification

For groundwater applications, refer to our borehole water treatment guide.

7. Why Proper RO Pretreatment Matters

Insufficient pretreatment may cause:

  • ♦ Rapid RO membrane fouling
  • ♦ Mineral scaling
  • ♦ Higher operating pressure
  • ♦ Reduced product-water flow
  • ♦ Unstable permeate quality
  • ♦ Frequent membrane cleaning
  • ♦ Shorter membrane service life

The pretreatment process should therefore be based on the actual water report instead of using the same standard configuration for every project.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Is pretreatment necessary for every RO system?

Yes. The required treatment stages may vary, but sediment control and cartridge filtration are normally necessary to protect RO membranes.

Can the pretreatment process be customized?

Yes. Iron removal, softening, chemical dosing, ultrafiltration, and other stages can be added according to the raw-water analysis.

How is the correct capacity selected?

Pretreatment flow must satisfy the RO feed-water requirement rather than only the RO product-water capacity. Recovery rate, backwashing demand, and operating margin must also be considered.

How often should filter media be replaced?

Replacement depends on raw-water quality, operating hours, backwashing performance, and media condition. Regular pressure and water-quality monitoring is recommended.

Can the system operate automatically?

Yes. Automatic backwashing, dosing, water-level control, valve operation, and fault alarms can be integrated through PLC control.
